Q: I'm trying to stamp on paper that is slick. What type of stamp/ink should I use to prevent smearing?
A: Dye inks work great on glossy papers because they dry very quickly. Solvent inks, such as Staz On, also work on non-porous surfaces such as glass, metal and plastic.
Q: What kinds of stamps are easy for beginners to use?
A: I am a beginner, and I like to use the clear stamps because it makes it eaiser to see where you are placing the stamp.
Q: What stamps should I buy first?
A: I find that I use basic geometric shapes and alpahbets more than more specific images like a cat etc.
A: Also find an all occasion stamp set that you can use for many items, birthday, holiday, scrapbook, cardmaking, accents to home decor w/ flowers or picture you prefer. If you have one good beginning set you'll have more versatility, ink only sections of a stamp and have more variety (i.e. let's say you have a stamp with a flower on it and the phrase thank you...really you have at least two stamps there depending on how you ink it, flower, thank you phrase, maybe a planter, ribbon, or leaf depending on how the flower is sketched.) One good all occassion stamp set can go a long way. And if you find you're using it a lot, you know you're a stamper and can start adding to your collection. :)
