Use your photo-editing program to get rid of red-eye quickly and easily for a natural-looking picture.

Many photo-editing programs have a red-eye filter or tool to remove red-eye from your images. For best results, follow this simple technique:

  1. After creating a duplicate layer, select the lasso tool from the tool bar and set the Feather option to 1 pixel. Carefully lasso the red part of the eye and about a pixel beyond.
  2. Find the Hue/Saturation selection in the menu bar (under Enhance in Elements) and drag the Lightness bar all the way to the left, which makes the pupil black like it should be.
  3. If you lose your catch light (white spot in the pupil from the flash) and want it back, select the Eraser tool, change the brush to the appropriate size, and erase where the white was. Or, create your own catch light by lassoing a small area of the pupil, returning to Hue/Saturation, and moving the slider on Lightness all the way to the right.
