Alter Photographs Artistically

Many scrapbookers crop or other wise alter photographs before using them in a layout. Cropping refers to cutting or trimming the photos in such a way as to enhance the aesthetic appeal or add focus to a particular element. Cropping or altering can be done digitally or by cutting and trimming the actual photographs.

The simplest form of cropping involves cutting away areas of the picture (i.e. the background scenery) and using only the main element, often a person.

There are various other methods of cropping photographs artistically. For example, the scrapbooker might use a punch to cut rounded corners or cut shapes in corners that allow the matting to show through.
Self-Framing Photographs

One interesting method of altering or cropping photos is to create self frames. This involves cutting a shape, often a rectangle or square, from the inside of the photograph, trimming perhaps a quarter inch from around the edges, then assembling the cut shape back inside the photo before blocking. This creates an interesting frame-like look that adds interest to photographs or highlights a central element. The following link has examples of self framed cropped photographs
